New York Fashion Week: Farah Angsana Fall 2010

Before The Show: The Fall 2010 Farah Angsana show got off to a very slow start. Perhaps it was the weather, or that people had already ventured off-site to begin drinking, but at 6:20, this was the scene at the poor Salon:



Thankfully, due to those savvy PR magicians, the seats finally filled up as pretty people were plucked from standing room to beef up the front row.

Overheard In The Crowd: A rather disheveled-looking woman noticed that a poor bird had been trapped inside the tents all day. What made this observation stand out was the fact that the woman was a dead ringer for Crazy Bird Lady from Mary Poppins.






The Collection: The show started off with a bunch of short, embellished black and silver cocktail dresses. They were fun, frilly, decadent -an easy pic for a New Year's Eve soiree. But then things took an odd twist when different colors - pinks, purples, fire engine reds - started walking down the runway adorned with jewels, flowers, and feathers flapping in the wind like those of the poor bird stuck in the rafters. As longer evening dresses emerged, there was a hiccup in the fluidity of the line. Some were simple, elegant, and red-carpet friendly, while others looked like they belonged on a flamenco dancer. I blame the severe overuse of chiffon ruffles.




Trend Spotting: A lot of embellishments. Some done tastefully, others not so much. Also, bright colors for evening, i.e. magentas, reds, and rich blues.

Overall Impression: While I appreciate the effort, this collection was not my cup of tea. The simpler gowns were the most successful, as Angsana's draping skills are showcased best when not upstaged by too many chachkas.
