Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Backstage at Cynthia Rowley with MAC
The Scene: Rowley's show was held at the beautiful Gotham Hall, but by no means was it exempt from the usual craziness of the tents. Photographers, bloggers, and various unspecified others crowded around the geniuses at MAC and Wella Professionals to watch them at work. There was also a bustling last-gluing-and-straightening station in one corner, and the room vaguely smelled of burnt plastic. Amid the chaos, the models were impressively calm.
Overheard backstage: "These lashes are MAJOR!"
The Look: Val Garland created a fierce, gorgeous look for the Rowley models. She described it as a "cute, girly look" offset by a "young, Japanese," almost tribal edge. She created an "angular, almond-shaped eye" with a "scaffold of lashes." Paired with a soft beige lip and dewy skin, the interplay of innocent and sexy was no less than head-turning. The hair look was equally striking: crimped, teased, messy ponytails and buns with jewel tone and white-blonde extensions interspersed.
The Products: MAC Fluidline gel eyeliner in Blacktrack, MAC false lashes #3, MAC Studio Sculpt SPF foundation, MAC Iridescent Pressed Powder in Belightful
Get The Look: This look is certainly not for the timid - or for those short on time. Garland started by gluing two sets of MAC #3 lashes together, then straightening them with a flat-iron (yes, you read that right). Using the gel eyeliner, she drew a thick, dark line along the upper lashes, fanning it out slightly at the corner. Then, starting from slightly below the outer corner of the eye, Garland drew a short, diagonal line, running parallel to the fanned-out edge of the first line. Then, the thickened, straightened lashes were applied to the upper lash line and along the shorter diagonal line. The face was simple - even, flawless skin, achieved with Studio Sculpt liquid foundation and a brush, and a light coating of iridescent Pressed Powder, particularly under the eyes.
