Makeover May: How I Got The Best Hair of My Life at Ted Gibson Salon
Ted Gibson Salon
You know how sometimes as women we fall into a rut, purchasing five of the same T-shirt, four pairs of the same jeans and wearing the same hairstyle for over ten years? Yep, that was me. Even after losing a considerable amount of weight, I was still hiding behind the same look. This May, I've decided to retire my old hair, makeup and clothes for something new and exciting. It's time for the outside to match the inside, people. My first stop: Ted Gibson Salon for the hair of my dreams.
After saying "Hi" to Ted and Jason (Ted was filming a Today appearance while I was getting my hair done - notes on that to come because you have to watch), I slipped into a chair with my new Best Hair Friends Forever, Justin Pellicione and Sade Williams. We talked for a bit about my current hair care routine and what I really wanted. I said, "You know, I've never walked out of a hair salon and felt sexy. I've felt 'pretty' and I've felt 'great' but never 'sexy.' For the first time in my life, give me 'sexy hair.'"
There's a policy at Ted Gibson Salon: ask and ye shall receive. Here's how Kristin got her sexy back.
Justin gets to work on my color
Justin and I discussed warming up my color my pulling the warm brown from my naturally highlighted ends through my hair, which is lower maintenance than a whole head full of color. He got to work using L'oreal INOA, which is a complete revolution in hair color. This ammonia-free color system uses ODS technology, which uses an oil-based delivery system to maximize the delivery of the color while wrapping each strand in conditioning oils that actually moisturize and improve the condition of your hair. Justin used the ballayage technique to paint my highlights on with the Inoa haircolor, which resulted in a sunkissed warm brown around my face and throughout my hair. The result is an incredibly natural, subtle look that warmed my complexion completely. Sade giving me the long locks I've been dying for my whole life
I'm also one of those women who's never had permanent extensions done, even though I've been craving long hair as long as I can remember. Ted once saw a picture of me in temporary extensions (try his line if you're looking for a brief change) and said, "That's the hair you were born to have." Ok, you know what? Let's give it a shot. I gave the ok and Sade, Ted's resident weave technician and hairstylist, went to work, sewing four tracks of hair into my freshly-colored hair. She cut layers into the length and then gave me a bit of curl. The result? Warm, beautiful hair that brought me to tears. Let's put it this way: I looked so hot that Ted barely recognized me when they turned the hair around to show him my new look. As Ted and Jason put it, my new look is "MAJOR." I had to upgrade my outfit when I got home. You can't wear slouchy tops with hair like that.
Ta-da! Me with my fabulous hair!
Look, Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, magazine editors, television stars and many of Manhattan and DC's best get their hair done by Ted Gibson and Company for a reason: this is a professional salon that is completely focused on results. Your hair broadcasts so many things about you: health, self-esteem, personal image and, when you get right down to it, self-worth. Any woman who is serious about her hair needs this experience of a lifetime a minimum of once, where you sit down with a team of industry experts who work with you to create silken, healthy hair that tells the world that you're a force of nature. Color, extensions, blow outs, relaxers - Ted Gibson Salon is full service, chic and worth every single penny.Me with my colorist, Justin, before I strutted out the door
I'm planning on keeping my look through the summer while my own hair grows out underneath (maybe beyond - I really love my new look.) As a personal note, I want to thank Ted and Jason and my new Glam Squad, Justin and Sade, for giving me the greatest gift any woman could ask for: hair that I love that shows that I love myself. Customer for life? Right here.Outfit upgrade to go with my fabulous hair

Beauty Directory Special Entry: A Sex and the City 2 Blow Out Party at Ted Gibson Salon
I interrupt this deluge of Earth Day coverage to inform you of a fabulous beauty party offering that's a don't miss.
We're all kind of crazed over the upcoming Sex and the City movie sequel, yes? I mean, I've only posted the trailer three times (but, really, who's counting?) and I've already got my shoes planned out. Well, someone else is pretty excited about the forthcoming cinematic release and he wants to celebrate with the ladies of NYC and DC. Oh yes, I'm talking about my friend and yours, Ted Gibson.
From May 14th through the 29th, Ted is offering the opportunity for you to book a SATC Salon Blow Out Party! This special discount is valid for a party of four or more and includes fabulous blowouts for premiere-worthy hair at 15% off for each guest of your party, a free glass of champagne, AND you can walk out with his miracle Ted Gibson Styling Sheets for just $10! Look, for a salon that charges the most expensive haircut around (it's $950 to get a haircut from Ted, people), this is quite a bargain and honestly, who wants to greet Carrie and the girls looking anything less than fabulous?
When booking the party, make sure you mention “Sex and the City” to get this discount. It's a fun and fabulous way to get your girls together for a bit of beauty, some champagne and a girls night out. Salon information is below. I think I might book one of my own for the movie's release on May 27th. I might need a little red carpet hair to go with my movie ticket.

Eco-Chic: Earth Day News from Louis Vuitton, DECLEOR and ION Studio
So, as most of you know, FSB is a big fan of eco-friendly fashion and beauty lines, celebrating these earth-friendly pioneers all year round. This week is Earth Day (Thursday, April 22nd) and I’ll be taking the week to highlight some hand-selected news from some of the biggest and best brands that put their focus on the planet.
Louis Vuitton will be donating 10% of all sales from their site to Global Green USA, where the money will be used to focus on the greening of several major US cities, including New Orleans and Los Angeles. As part of their dedication, they’ve asked some of fashion, style and beauty’s tastemakers to share their own greening efforts on the site. Look for messages from celebrities like Zoe Saldana, Nina Garcia and others to share their efforts on the site. It’s rather inspiring. Click here to check it out.
Skincare line DECLEOR placed their focus on the fragile beauty resources of Madagascar back in 2008 and to re-energize focus on the area, they’re releasing a reed diffuser with scent notes that celebrate the region. Look for sumptuous clove, vanilla, violet and musk to transport your senses and environment to the area while your purchase does a world of good: all profits from the sale of the reed diffuser will to be donated to ASMADA, a program to develop Madagascar’s rural communities, preserve its local resources, and assist with such important initiatives as health care and clean water.
Just because you’re going green and putting the focus on the environment doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice looking glamorous. Here in Manhattan, ION Studio is partnering with Rahua Hair Care for a glass bottle campaign, where you’ll receive a 10% discount when you bring your Rahua Finishing Treatment ($45) bottle for a refill. Rahua Finishing Treatment is a styling and conditioning product consisting of organic and 100% natural ingredients that has quickly become favorite with stylists and clients alike at ION Studio. Additionally, the studio’s co-founders, a favorite of editors and fashion’s elite, are teaching free classes at New York City’s Empire Beauty School, focusing on eco-friendly initiatives with the goal of growing a new generation of “green” hairstylists interested in opening sustainable businesses. Contact ION at (212) 343-9060 to make an appointment or to find out more about these fabulous programs.
Keep it tuned here for more eco-chic fashion, style and beauty news, including a forthcoming eco-chic cocktail recipe. ☺

Ask the Expert: A Reader Question Answered by Celebrity Hairstylist Ted Gibson
I recently launched a little feature called Ask The Expert, where you ask me fashion, beauty and style-related questions, and I open the Rolodex to have a famous expert answer it for you. Recently, reader Sheri had a question about her fine hair:
"I have really fine hair. I can get it looking good in the morning, but by mid-day it's totally flat and stringy looking. How can I keep the morning volume without having to reapply volumizer every few hours?" - Sheri, NYC
We asked celebrity hairstylist (Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway, countless other celebs and magazine covers) and TLC's What Not To Wear hair guru Ted Gibson to answer Sheri's question for her. Here's Ted's advice:
“Tilt your head over in the morning and, using Beautiful Hold Hairspray ($19.99, give your mane a liberal spray from scalp to the ends. Toss your hair back over, spray it again, and you’ll have instant volume that will last all day long!”
Not only did Sheri get her question answered by a celebrity expert (and good friend), but we're giving her the hairspray as a gift for FREE! Looking forward to seeing fab photos of that massive mane, lady!
Have a burning fashion, style or beauty question AND want to win the product(s) mentioned? Ask away in the comments section! We've got experts LINED UP to answer questions AND give away free stuff!

Spring Hair Trend: How to Get The Fishtail Braid
Remember I was telling you about the fabulous Levi's Fall presentation? Well, even though the collection was for fall, the hair was very new and now, especially with some of the models sporting the Fishtail Braid, one of spring's hottest hair trends. One of my favorites, celebrity and runway hairstylist Rodney Cutler, was the man behind this killer look. For those of you looking to evoke a little rocker style this holiday weekend and beyond, here's how to get the style straight from the man himself:
1) Spray Cutler Volumizing Spray ($21) into damp hair. Blow hair dry using your hands to rake and tousle your hair.
2) Secure a slightly off-center ponytail.
3) Fishtail braid the ponytail: Start by splitting the hair in two sections. On the right hand side, take a small outside section and bring over and under with the left hand side. Repeat with the left hand side and continue until you get to the bottom. Secure with a clear or tonal elastic, then lightly pull it loose to create a disheveled look and feel.
Quick, easy and so runway cool, right? Give it a try!

New on FSB! Got a Fashion, Style or Beauty Question? Ask The Experts!
I was sitting there thinking, you know, I know a lot of really amazing experts in the field of fashion, beauty, styling, fitness and the like. You all have questions that I'm sure you'd like to have answered. You also love FREE stuff. After a glass of wine it hit me: why not combine all three of these into a new feature for the site!
Hence, I'm creating a new feature on the site called Ask The Experts. Burning hair question? Styling advice? Should you deep condition before or after highlights? What's the best fragrance to wear on a date? How do you grow out your hair? Are sweatpants really in for spring? How do you mix the perfect martini? What kind of flowers are in for spring? I've got major experts and celebrity gurus that will answer them ALL!
You ask the questions and I will make sure some serious industry heavy-hitter will answer it for you. Even better, if your question is chosen, you'll win one, some or ALL of the products listed as the solution to your dilemma. You get your question answered AND you get swag from an industry expert?!? I mean, really, who's gonna turn THIS down?
Even better, guess who's the first expert? None other than the lovely, amazing and fabulous Ted Gibson. You know, celebrity hairstylist and hair guru from TLC's What Not To Wear? Ted is excited about the situation, so ask away in the comments box! I'll send one question along and the winner will get their question answered as well as win products from Ted's fabulous line. We'll post the answer and the name of the winner at the beginning of next week!
Who loves you? ME, that's who. Ask away!

Beauty Directory: Relax and Reinvent at Woodley and Bunny Salon and Apothecary
I feel that hair salons appeal to certain types of clientele. I'm personally a rocker chick at heart so let me expressly state that if you're looking for cutting-edge treatments with a decidedly chill vibe, there's only one place to go. Hop on the L train and head to Williamsburg: it's time to go to Woodley and Bunny.
The salon floor. The beauty room is off the left at the back.
I loved this. It's a wall of Polaroids of the cool looks they give their customers.
Upon arrival, I was offered a choice of beverage and treated to a mind-blowing scalp massage and conditioner application. While the conditioner worked its magic, Cande brought me into the Beauty Room (a new addition to the salon and a must do for anyone, period) and discussed what I'd like to get out of the facial. I said that I needed to hydrate my skin (subway travel and champagne are hard on the face) and that I just wanted to relax. Three soothing layers of masks, a blissful massage and an eyebrow shaping later and I'm eternally indebted to Cande. This is a woman with amazing energy who really focuses on healing and making sure the client feels good. We all need a Cande in our lives. Book that facial now, people.
I digress. Post-facial, the gorgeous and amazing James placed me in the chair and proceeded to blow my hair out with an intoxicating (in a very good way) mixture of MoroccanOil and Sachajuan products. Never heard of Sachajuan? Neither had I. Evidently, Erin was racing around Los Angeles after having her products confiscated at the airport and found the Swedish label at Fred Segal. The line works with sea algae to deliver maximum nutrients to the hair. All I have to say is that it's days later and my hair feels hydrated, healthy and incredibly smooth. James and I discussed some options for styling with my new haircut and I emerged with new energy and a very edgy cool new style. It's love and I'm going back for more.
Woodley and Bunny is a fabulous location to stop in for even the quickest beauty treatment or to hang for a while while you create a new look.Their retail area has some of the best products known to man (makeup, hair, everything - bring the credit card or you'll be sorry) so feel free to take some of the products home on your way out.
If you're looking for a chill place to recharge, relax and reinvent, I highly recommend Woodley and Bunny.
I'm not just recommending it. I'm booking my follow-up appointment as we speak. That's love, people.

Beauty Directory: The Life-Changing Butterfly Explorer Treatment at Butterfly Studio Salon
I was recently explaining to a friend of mine how busy I am. Besides running FSB, I have a full-time job, multiple freelance clients, a Features Contributor spot for the fabulous Running With Heels and I'm working on two side projects. She listened, then said one thing that really got my attention:
"What are you doing to take care of yourself?"
And there it was, the question that brought a million things to light. Working like a maniac to keep all the balls in the air, I had really neglected myself. I was exhausted and it looked like it. Which is when I discovered probably the best thing that could ever happen to me: the Butterfly Explorer Treatment at Butterfly Studio Salon on New York's Fifth Avenue.
A quick bit about Butterfly Studio Salon, the brainchild of Kattia Solano, a legendary hairstylist here in the New York area. Trained by Frederic Fekkai, she's THE best-kept hair secret of beauty editors and New York elite. It's also a Kerastase flagship salon, which means that basically these mind-blowing products, along with cult favorite Shu Uemura, are all they'll use on your gorgeous locks. It's full-service, it's impossibly hip and it's worth every piece of press it gets.
And so, because I love you, my dear readers, I will show you the "Before" picture. I warn you: it ain't pretty and I wish someone had told me that my hair was sticking up like this:
The Butterfly Explorer is a hair treatment like no other. You're brought into a private room off the tony salon space where, in solitude with soothing music playing, your hair and your spirit are soothed into a state of elegant bliss. You're thinking, what does such a room look like? Allow me to show you where the magic happens:
Eli (pronounces "Ellie"), a licensed massage therapist, gave me a scalp massage surely taught to her by an angel, then customized a Shu Uemura hair treatment for my dry, damaged locks and proceeded to work her magic. I then sat under a gentle steamer that helped the conditioning treatment penetrate while I received a delightful hand massage. I was then treated to a scalp massage that can only be described as sheer bliss (if I smoked, I would have needed a cigarette afterward). The treatment was gently rinsed out of my hair and I received a neck and shoulder massage before I was whisked away to the blow dry bar. That's just part one.
After walking to the blow dry bar, one of their highly-trained associates blew my hair out with such precision it, well, blew my mind. This treatment also comes with a complimentary bang trim which, when Stacy (my new favorite person in the world) arrived to crop my nose-length bangs, turned into a serious conversation about the state of my hair. A decision was made: let's cut it. And hence, we now have the little slice of magic known as Kristin's Fabulous French Girl Haircut. You like?
Let me be clear about the experience of Butterfly Studio: you have to be really amazing to convince me in under an hour to do something I've been considering for over a year (I have a "thing" about the length of my hair.) This salon is about total caring and making sure that everyone who walks in leaves looking and feeling better than ever.
The Butterfly Explorer is an hour of unmitigated, restorative bliss with amazing Kerastase and Shu Uemura products. A massage therapist delivering healing hair and touch therapy followed by what could possibly be the best haircut of my life for a mere $140? DONE. If you live here in Manhattan, this is an absolute necessity. If you're visiting, you can skip the guided tour of Times Square. THIS is the can't miss experience when you come to New York City.
Book the appointment now, people. The results speak for themselves.

Beauty Directory: The Ultimate Red Carpet Blowout at Davide Torchio Salon
I was recently invited for a little pre-Oscar hair primping with famed hairstylist Davide Torchio. Not only has Davide given Carmen Electra, Adam Lambert, Lance Bass and Morgan Fairchild (I DIE for M.Fairchild) their fab coifs, but he's also worked his magic on two of my gorgeous friends, Dina and Sarah. Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, this wouldn't be an easy blowout for anyone. I had to wash my hair really quickly after one of my neighbor's children, a total bundle of joy, smeared a melted chocolate bar with almonds through the back of my hair while giving me a hug. Mothers of the world, I salute you.
I digress. After Davide assessed the situation, I was sent off to the shampoo bowl for a quick conditioning treatment, after which individual sections of my hair were conditioned and protected prior to any heat being applied. Davide himself performed the blowout and then one of his assistants flatirons tiny pieces of my hair to ensure it was glassy sleek and smooth. Davide then used the blow dryer to whisk my hair toward my face. Davide voiced my mood as he was doing it: "You need sexy, just-got-out-of-bed hair." Yes, my friend. We understand each other perfectly. That night I was indeed feeling belle du jour bedhead hot and Davide delivered without me having to say a word. Here is the fabulous result:
This salon is a very intimate experience with two floors of elegant space. Everything in the salon - the chairs, the beautifully-cut mirrors and chandeliers, down to the hair products and the brushes - is well-thought and deliberate. This is salon focuses on the HAIR, people, and the decor matches Davide's style aesthetic: modern, glamorous and quality.
Davide Torchio and his team do amazing color, wicked cuts and other services such as Keratin and Japanese straightening. If you're looking for something impossibly fresh and sleek, I'm making a recommendation to do something I never did before meeting Davide: just sit in the chair and let the man and his team do the work. You won't be disappointed.
OH! By the way, if you mention "Fashion.Style.Beauty" when booking an appointment with the salon through March 31st, you'll receive 20% off any and all salon services. Who loves you? ;)

Hair Trends: The Reverse Braid and Other Insider Tips Courtesy of Redken and Guido
I attended a fabulous event where a few of us beauty bloggers got a chance to sit with the legendary hairstylist Guido (he of multiple fashion shows around the world) and hear his take on runway and hairstyling trends courtesy of Redken. Charming and effusive, he really let it go and gave us some fun insight into what it's like to work with the legendary designers and their runway shows. Out of the conversation came a huge trend that you'll see in multiple magazines and on the street soon if you haven't already: the "reverse" or "fishtail" braid.
Photo Courtesy of Marcio Madiera for Style.com
Created as the look for Alexander Wang's genius Spring/Summer 2010 presentation and then seen again on the ADAM runway for A/W 2010, it's a new and effortless take on a classically girly look. Creating the look is incredibly simple and he suggests using Redken Aerate 08 Bodifying Cream-Mousse to give the hair some lift and to create lightweight hold (and since this recommendation comes from using the product on the runway and in photo shoots, it's been tested, believe me.) Simply reverse the direction of your hands when you braid your hair (as in, instead of tucking inward, pull and weave the hair in the opposite direction) starting at the nape of your neck and secure with a clear elastic. It's edgy and runway chic and should take about three minutes.
Redken products are available via a fine salon near you, so pick up this fabulous styling product and give the reverse braid a whirl. Runway walk completely optional.
Beauty Scene: Inside the Sunsilk Relaunch with Celebrity Hairstylist Teddy Charles
I received an invitation to try the newly-relaunched Sunsilk products at a fabulous event held at Pier 59 studios. For those of you who don't live here in Manhattan, television shows, runway shows and all sorts of entertainment events are held in these huge warehouse-looking halls so when you get a chance to go there, you just go. The invitation said, "Please arrive with freshly-washed hair (if possible)" because the brand's newest consultant, the fabulous celebrity hairstylist Teddy Charles, and his team would style our hair using the products and put us in front of the camera for a photo shoot. I'm not at liberty to give any specific details but I arrived from work with freshly-washed hair. I was to use the Hydra TLC Shampoo, Conditioner and Styling Creme. The specifics of how I got my hair washed before I got to the event will go to my grave with me but my dedication to you readers cannot be tested. That's LOVE, people.
Even as I was making a mad dash to the event, I have to tell you that my hair really did feel much softer and hydrated. I was immediately impressed with how quickly the conditioner penetrated the hair shaft. I arrived ready for action and was brought into a room with huge studio lights, a lounge with food and a photographer set-up. They weren't kidding, folks. This was a real photo shoot.
I was then introduced to Teddy Charles. Teddy Charles works runway shows and has celebrity clientele all over the world. He's a hair genius and a former Abercrombie model. The angels sang, the skies opened and the beauty deities gave me a blessing: Teddy decided to do my hair personally.
It's a whole new experience having someone that talented and gorgeous do you hair. I can make a million movie references (Shampoo, Out of Africa) but having a sweet and beautiful man do your hair and say, "You should wear your hair off your face. You are gorgeous" will have you floating for days. I know because I have yet to come down.
I was then whisked into makeup where the fabulous Angela did my smoky eye look. After a quick second touch-up from Teddy, I was ready to take my place in front of the camera with softer, sexier hair. A professional photographer, the fabulous Ana, took my new headshots while a soundtrack played in the background and my fellow bloggers cheered me on. What a fabulous night!
I can't share Teddy with all of you but I can tell you that these amazing products will be available in drugstores very soon. There are products for all types of hair and conditions, including curly hair, fine hair and shine-enhancing formulas. Head to your local Walmart or Drugstore.com soon and pick up these salon-tested products co-created by a man who definitely knows his hair.

New York Fashion Week: Backstage at Timo Weiland with ION Studio and MAC Cosmetics
I was invited backstage at the genius Timo Weiland presentation to get a sneak peek at the hair and makeup looks. Rather than write copious notes on these looks, I figured I'd let the artists speak for themselves. First up is Leonardo Manetti of ION Studio, celebrity hairstylist extraordinaire and runway veteran. Leonardo gave us the hair look for the show:
Then we had the pleasure of speaking with the genius Nadine Luke, Sr. Makeup Artist for MAC Cosmetics, who gave us the lowdown on the makeup look for the presentation.
Coverage of the show forthcoming. It absolutely did not disappoint.
